Abstract: Despite their importance in the global organization and economy of internet networks, content delivery networks (CDNs) remain quite unfamiliar outside professional circles. However, they have a key role for a smooth functioning of the distribution of digital contents. This paper assesses the importance of these new powerful economic actors of the internet, identify the technical and economic integration dynamics that underlie their development, and clarify some of the characteristics of their business models with a focus on interconnection.
