Abstract: The response delay in clearing the queue of automobiles waiting at a traffic light can be modeled by allowing one car to leave at the end of each of a series of discrete intervals in time. The steady-state queue formed at a cycle traffic light is discussed for general stationary arrival processes. A method of solution for the case where arrivals are Poisson is described. General formulas are given for the probability of not clearing the queue during a cycle and for the expected wait at the light.
