Abstract:
The combat model of Lanchester type given by S. J. Deitchman in investigating guerrilla-counterguerrilla warfare is reformulated in stochastic form. The situation is such that the guerrillas, having been preparing an ambush for the approaching regular force, start firing; they fire on the regulars, who are in full view, while the latter are forced to return fire blindly into the area supposedly occupied by the guerrillas. A formula for the winning probability is derived, and its simple approximating expression in terms of Poisson probabilities is also given.
