Using the Set-Covering Problem to Assign Fire Companies to Fire Houses

Abstract: This paper gives a set-covering-problem formulation for determining locations for two types of ladder trucks used by the New York City Fire Department. It shows that the formulation can accommodate several different realistic restrictions on the solutions.
