Abstract: An interesting example of a simple operations-research problem in which the object is to find the best balance between two opposing factors has been given by Sir Charles Goodeve.* The example was first described by Passano† in an address to the American Iron and Steel Institute and deals with minimizing the waste in the production of steel bars. Operations Research , ISSN 0030-364X, was published as Journal of the Operations Research Society of America from 1952 to 1955 under ISSN 0096-3984.
