Accuracy and Tactical Implications of Bearings-Only Ranging Algorithms

Abstract: Passive (bearings-only) ranging uses only directional information to deduce the distance to a moving target. This paper derives an estimate for the accuracy of a least squares passive ranging algorithm. The formula can be used to compare the effectiveness of various tactics.
