Abstract: B. Deuermeyer and L. B. Schwarz have developed a very simple approximation of a complex multi-echelon system. Here we propose several refinements of their technique, leading to models nearly as simple and considerably more robust. Our analysis suggests guidelines for the design of large-scale logistics systems, differing markedly from those of earlier studies.
