Abstract: The rapid expansion in the use of mathematical methods of inventory control and production scheduling brought about in the last few years through the efforts of an active group of operations analysts and econometricians has led me to reflect on the forces that determine the directions in which new developments and new ideas such as operations research are channeled. Operations Research , ISSN 0030-364X, was published as Journal of the Operations Research Society of America from 1952 to 1955 under ISSN 0096-3984.
