Abstract:
At a Princeton University Conference on Linear Programming held on March 13--15, 1957, Merrill M. Flood suggested a target-assignment model of a highly nonlinear nature. This model was simplified in a recent article (Manne, A. S. 1958. A target assignment problem. Oper. Res. (May--June) 346--351.) and thereby adapted to solution by linear programming. The following is an attempt at a simplification of the model in a different direction, that of small-kill levels. This is done so that ordinary Lagrange-multiplier methods can be used to solve the problem.
