Abstract:
Military operations research in its early years is contrasted with a description of its present status. Changes in the types of problems attacked, the availability of data, tested techniques, and supporting theory are described as influencing the impact of military operations research on policy. Increasing emphasis on operational gaming is seen both as an expression of inadequacy in dealing with contemporary problems and as a reflection of the promise offered by this technique for an improved military operations-research capability.
