Abstract: A common practical variant of the usual single-server queuing sysetm has a service mechanism that operates regardless of whether or not customers are present. The equilibrium behavior of such systems is considered in the case of negative exponential services and a general class of stationary but not necessarily recurrent inputs. The equilibrium queue length distribution is related to that in the associated systems with the standard service facility.
