Abstract: In the 1960s, the Department of Economics of the University of Sydney decided to "modernize." By this, it meant adopting solely a neoclassical approach to theoretical issues and policy questions. In effect, says the author, it amounted to censorship of alternative views. Several professors began a battle in the 1970s to develop a political economy program that included such an alternative view. They succeeded. Here is their story.
