Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, 2025, vol. 61, issue 11, 3296-3307

Abstract: The goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality (the “dual carbon” goal) is an important strategic decision for China to cope with global climate change and promote green and low-carbon development. Intelligent transformation of the manufacturing industry is critical for achieving the “dual carbon” goal. This study uses China’s listed manufacturing companies from 2009 to 2021 as a sample to empirically test the impact of intelligent manufacturing on corporate carbon emissions. This study finds that intelligent manufacturing significantly reduces corporate carbon emissions. An analysis of the influencing mechanism shows that intelligent manufacturing mainly reduces carbon emissions by improving the energy efficiency of manufacturing enterprises. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the carbon emission reduction effect of intelligent manufacturing occurs mainly in the sub-samples with higher low-carbon awareness, greater corporate financialization, and higher innovation. Therefore, the government should vigorously promote the intelligent transformation of manufacturing companies to achieve green economic development.
