Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between green entrepreneurship and the transformation of government assessment toward “environmental protection” in 2013. Using textual analysis to construct the green entrepreneurship dictionary, we discover that following the change in government assessment, green entrepreneurship dramatically rises in cities with more polluted environments. We further find that increasing investment in environmental governance is the primary channel to achieve the effect. In areas where environmental infrastructure investment is higher, the promotion of green entrepreneurship is more evident due to the change in government assessment. Our paper provides new insights on the development of green entrepreneurship.
