Logistics Searching for New Equilibria between Infrastructures and Knowledge Capabilities

Economia dei Servizi, 2009, issue 3, 319-328
Abstract:
Logistics is a critical issue of the new globalized world. Innovative technologies, integrated transportation systems and transport nodes are becoming crucial factors for competition in the international markets and for ensuring a sustainable development in the medium-long term. More investments in transport services and infrastructures are needed to catch new economic opportunities. Nevertheless, the evolution of the Italian scenario appears quite problematic, slowed down by two main problems: public financial constraints and, traditionally, a strong road based transportation system. Traffic congestion, pollution and loss of competitiveness are some of the main negative external effects that come out from this scenario. Specific policy interventions to promote intermodality are necessary to minimize these negative externalities.
