Local Utilities and the Energy Scenario: Between Uncertainty and Change
Alberto Clô
Economia dei Servizi, 2012, issue 2, 305-318
Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to stimulate the debate on the future of energy industry and the role of local multiutilities in a changing scenario. Public utilities operating in the energy industry must «live in the uncertainty», challenging tenyear stagnation macroeconomic figures, geopolitical maps, new technological paradigms, institutional and regulatory contexts. The paper raises questions on business perspectives of energy utilities, starting from the state of the art, then moving to the analysis of relevant contexts: Global, national, local. Uncertainty and change characterizing such contexts raise new opportunities for public utilities. Those companies able to adopt a dynamic attitude in developing business strategies driven by the newscenario will seize these opportunities.
