Italy in wide-angle: Workforce, emigration, population and GDP at the provincial level in Republican Italy (1951-1991)

Dario Chiaiese and Valentina Ciriotto

Rivista di storia economica, 2025, issue 2, 121-155

Abstract: This paper presents a new dataset containing provincial and yearly data on female and male workforce divided by sector (agriculture, industry and services), migration, and population by class of age between 1951 and 1991. Additionally, we provide preliminary estimates of yearly provincial GDP at constant prices (2005 euros) for the same period. To achieve this, we combined data from multiple sources and used interpolation techniques to ensure the consistency of the series. The dataset contributes to the literature on regional and provincial studies in Italy for the period of interest, providing a valuable resource for examining Italy’s historical development and regional disparities within the context of postwar economic changes and structural transformations.
