Silver as a Means of Payment in the Old Babylonian Economy

Abstract: During the Old Babylonian period silver was used as a measure of value for various kinds of goods and services, and as a means of payment. There are many references to the use of silver in the state (temple, palace) sector of the economy as well as in the private one. The present contribution aims at providing a summary of Old Babylonian cuneiform documentation relative to silver ranging from law codes, royal edicts and international treaties to letters, contracts and administrative documents.
