The Growth of Italy's Apparel Industry, 1861-1913: A Statistical Reconstruction

Stefano Fenoaltea ()

Rivista di storia economica, 2017, issue 3, 315-350

Abstract: In this statistical reconstruction of Italy's apparel industries from 1861 to 1913 seven series refer to the new products of cotton, wool, pure silk, mixed silk, jute, linen, and hemp cloth; following the usual unfortunate conventions, these exclude (apparently widespread) household production. A further series, kept separate, refers to the maintenance of such products; with an admirable lack of concern for mere logic, today's conventions attribute the maintenance of producer durables to industry, that of consumer durables to the services. Six further series refer to wool felts, wool hats, wool caps, fur hats, straw hats, and straw braid.
