Rivista di storia economica, 2001, issue 1, 77-110

Abstract: At the beginning of the twentieth century in Italy the competence for economics planning and regulation was exclusively concentrated in the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, inside which a new office was expressly created in 1902 with the aim of searching deals opportunities between labour organizations and ruling classes. The pressure exercised on the Parliament allowed to reach important targets, with an action of capillary survey of working conditions. In order to supply an updated landscape over the activities of the Ufficio del Lavoro, the "Bollettino dell'Ufficio del Lavoro" was created; it showed month by month the results of all the surveys completed, together with each kind of information that could be useful to labourers. This article is a "Bollettino" reading, in the attempt to give the importance of a really precious instrument of research, able to give an interesting vision of the Italian society of the period.
