Abstract: Nature 385, 718-721 (1997) The abbreviations used for methyl salicylate (MeSA) and salicylic acid (SA) led to confusion over nomenclature: MeSA is the methyl ester of salicylic acid and not a methylated derivative of salicylic acid (otherwise known as creosotic acid).
