From tilings to coverings

Abstract: Like ordinary crystals, quasicrystals have long-range order; unlike crystals, however, they are not based on a periodic lattice. A mathematical description of their structure has existed for some time, but only now is a plausible physical explanation emerging. The latest development comes from electron microscopy on decagonal Al72Ni20Co8, which provides support for the so-called 'coverage' model.
