A saola poses for the camera

John Whitfield

Nature, 1998, vol. 396, issue 6710, 410-410

Abstract: There are probably not many large land mammals unknown to science. Hence the excitement five years ago at the emergence of a new species of antelope from the forests of Vietnam. The original saola was reconstructed from hunting trophies, however, and no biologist has set eyes on a living beast. Now we have a photo of one.
