Shear chemistry

David Jones

Nature, 1999, vol. 399, issue 6733, 212-212

Abstract: On the molecular level, cutting of materials is a brutal process. Daedalus plans to improve the process by use of a laser cutter, which raises the molecules along the line of the cut into an anti-bonding, repulsive state. The cut edges are then stabilized by reactive cutting lubricant to keep them separate.
