Abstract: Nature 418, 323–326 (2002). It has been drawn to our attention that the 3D7 parasite, labelled as an African parasite in our Letter, was initially isolated from The Netherlands, although we have some genetic evidence suggesting an African origin (Wootton, J.C. and Su, X., manuscript in preparation). Therefore, 3D7 in our paper should be labelled as having a European origin, with a good probability of having originated from Africa.
