Abstract: Quick as a flash Ultrafast lasers are now so effective that a new way of manipulating the magnetization of a medium can be envisaged. Laser pulses just 200 femtoseconds long can act as magnetic field pulses to instantly magnetize a medium. This raises the prospect of photomagnetic recording as one solution to the need for ever increasing density and speed of data storage and manipulation.
