Abstract: Abstract Beninger and Quinsey 1 argue that we provide no evidence that chimpanzees show other-regarding preferences in the two-option test situation under conditions in which they would be expected to show such a preference. This criticism is misdirected, because our aim was not to determine whether chimpanzees would demonstrate prosocial preference under any circumstances. Instead, it was to determine whether chimpanzees show pro-social preferences in situations similar to those in which these occur routinely in humans.
