Abstract: Plant steroid signals New evidence argues for a revision of the current view of the brassinosteroid signalling pathway in plants. Together with auxins, gibberellins and other plant hormones, brassinosteroids play an important role in plant growth and development. The brassinosteroid signalling pathway had been proposed to involve regulation of the transcription factor BES1, in a mechanism similar to that of the Wnt signalling pathway in metazoans. But a new analysis suggests that the parallels to Wnt signalling are not valid. Rather than being subject to changes in subcellular localization, BES1 in plants is always in the nucleus. BES1 phosphorylation inhibits its multimerization and prevents its binding to target sites on brassinosteroid-responsive promoters.
