Abstract: News from two fronts Some facts and figures to illuminate the debate on women in science: only 1 of 44 recipients of the Colworth medal, given annually to a promising British biochemist under 35, is a woman. And just 1 of 27 plenary lectures at recent Biochemical Society annual meetings was given by a woman. Across the Atlantic, however, there have been some advances. The National Institutes of Health has made significant changes to its pioneer awards to give women a better chance to compete.
