Abstract: The big questions With The Ecological Theatre and the Evolutionary Play, published in 1965, G. Evelyn Hutchinson influenced the thinking of a generation of ecologists. He introduced the term 'biosphere' into the English language, and wrote about global warming, fertilizers and the phosphate cycle before they were fashionable. In 'In Retrospect', Alison Jolly presents a student's view of Hutchinson, and what it was like to face exam questions like “Discuss the effect of man's size on his view of the Universe”.
