Abstract: Mutation by numbers Many theoretical calculations in genetics rely on an estimate of u, the mutation rate per nucleotide in the genome, but its value has been controversial because only indirect estimates have previously been available. For the first time a direct estimate of the mutation rate per base pair has been obtained in Drosophila, based on scanning the genome of mutation accumulation lines for mutational changes in the DNA. The new estimate is relatively high, implying that selection against deleterious mutations favours the evolution of sex and recombination.
