Abstract: Elementary precautions Richard Gregory cites Sherlock Holmes as the inspiration for a 50-year career in research on visual perception. Not only did the great detective set an example of how to analyse clues (or the lack of them) methodically, he also showed the value of inferences that jump beyond the evidence to hypotheses.
