Abstract:
This planet is a gas 'Hot Jupiters', extrasolar giant planets orbiting close to their parent stars, have transformed our view about what planets are and how they form. One in particular, HD 209458b, was found to have a huge escaping atmosphere that forms a comet-like tail. New Hubble Space Telescope observations of HD 209458b reveal a hot dense layer in its atmosphere where the temperature rises and atmospheric gas accelerates to escape the planet. This detection provides a new way to study the complex escape process of extrasolar planetary atmospheres.
