Abstract: Apoptotic cells are engulfed by phagocytes in a process that involves the GTPase Rab5. This paper shows that Rab5 promotes phagosome maturation, and Rab5 activation is induced by the guanine nucleotide exchange factor Gapex-5, which is recruited to phagosomes via microtubules.
