Abstract: Dengue virus: Reading the signals Dengue haemorrhagic fever is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito infected with dengue virus. It infects more that 50 million people a year and causes some 20,000 deaths, but at present there are no vaccines or therapies specific for the virus. The identification of the host proteins targeted by the virus and the signalling pathways responsible for controlling inflammation and antiviral immunity are essential for the development of therapeutic strategies. Szu-Ting Chen et al. have made a step towards that goal with the discovery that dengue virus interacts with the C-type lectin CLEC5A. The interaction promotes the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and contributes to lethal disease in a mouse model.
