Abstract: Differentiated sensory neurons that switch fate Sensory neurons, once they have completed their embryonic development, usually maintain robust expression of specific sensory receptor genes, for example light colour-sensitive pigments. In this study, Simon Sprecher and Claude Desplan show that blue-sensitive (Rh5) neurons in the fruitfly's larval eye switch fate — and switch pigment — during metamorphosis to become green sensitive (Rh6) and form the adult eyelets, small organs on the top of the fly's head, which reset its circadian clock. The work opens the way to the genetic investigation of gene regulatory mechanisms controlling such rare fate-switching events in post-mitotic neurons.
