Abstract:
Development: the BDNF trigger The neurotrophin BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) influences the expression of many genes in the developing nervous system and is known to induce nitric oxide. Nott et al. show that BDNF triggers nitric oxide synthesis and accompanying S-nitrosylation of several proteins in the nucleus of cortical neurons, including the histone deacetylase HDAC2. Nitrosylation of HDAC2 leads to its release from the chromatin of neurotrophin-dependent genes, which allows histone acetylation and active transcription.
