Abstract: Carbon offset: India's missing forests India boasts large expanses of land ripe for forestation, and was an early advocate of a global carbon market. Why then, have so few 'carbon offset' forests been planted? Paroma Basu reports on some of the reasons, including the frustrations involved in gaining the all-important Clean Development Mechanism status for new plantations. The emergence of India's firm science base during Indira Ghandi's time as prime minister is discussed in Ashok Parthasarathi's book Technology at the Core. Jayant Narlikar is Nature's reviewer, finding echoes of the sitcom Yes Minister in the Indian system.
