Abstract:
Asteroids lost in space There are known gaps in the main asteroid belt, called Kirkwood gaps, where the gravitational effects of the giant planets have cleared away any asteroids by making their potential orbits unstable. David Minton and Renu Malhotra have modelled the structure of the asteroid belt and find that there are regions where the orbits are stable but still devoid of bodies. They then demonstrate that these depletions are consistent with the effects of the orbital migration of Jupiter and Saturn early in the history of the Solar System.
