Abstract: Quantum logic: going against the spin Many of the suggestions for quantum logic devices centre on a single electron spin trapped inside a semiconductor quantum dot, but the coherence is degraded by interactions with the lattice nuclear spins. Xu et al. report a means of suppressing the nuclear spin fluctuations by exploiting the spectroscopic response of the coherent optical dark state associated with the two spin states of an electron. This enables the electron spin coherence to be preserved much longer.
