Abstract:
Optical slice-and-dice Quantum computers and information networks will require a memory that allows storage and recall of data, analogous to the random access memory of electronic computers. To that end, a team based at the Australian National University in Canberra has developed a scheme for a new form of optical memory that allows random access to stored optical quantum information. Multiple pulses of light are stored in a coherent optical memory based on rubidium atoms. The pulses can be arbitrarily recalled, split and temporally compressed or stretched. Though experiments so far have used classical light pulses, the technique should be applicable to the construction of a random time-access memory for quantum information.
