Abstract: Gene regulation examined Many, possibly most phenotypic differences among individuals arise from differences in gene expression and the underlying transcriptional regulation. Zheng et al. studied the variability of transcription factor binding among individuals on a genome-wide scale, using transcription-binding variability as a genetic trait for QTL (quantitative trait locus) mapping. Taking a well-known yeast transcription factor in the yeast pheromone pathway as an example, they mapped the underlying loci responsible for variation. The study revealed novel insights into mechanisms of gene regulation as well as new regulators of the pheromone pathway in yeast.
