Abstract: Glacial water revealed Water within glaciers and ice sheets has the potential to exert considerable influence on ice velocity and, ultimately, on the rate of sea level rise. Direct measurement of the magnitude and characteristics of water stored within glaciers has proved difficult, but Joel Harper et al. now report the discovery of an extensive network of interconnected basal crevasses within the Bench Glacier in Alaska, revealed through the use of a combination of direct borehole observations and radar and seismic imaging. The crevasses hold water equivalent to a 10-centimetre layer, enough to be an important factor for future ice-sheet modelling.
