An hour-glass magnetic spectrum in an insulating, hole-doped antiferromagnet

Abstract:
A spectrum of a different stripe The origin of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in layered copper oxide compounds remains mysterious, but magnetism is thought to have a key role. One possibility is that it derives from a fluctuating pattern of spin and charge stripes. Experiments to study the magnetic dynamics in high-Tc cuprates have revealed an unusual spectrum with an hourglass shape, but there is no consensus on the interpretation of this spectrum. Boothroyd et al. now demonstrate that the hourglass spectrum can arise in La2-xSrxCoO4 (LSCoO), an insulating hole-doped antiferromagnet with a crystal structure similar to that of the 214 family of lanthanum strontium copper oxide superconductors. Unlike its superconducting relatives, LSCoO remains insulating over a wide range of doping, meaning that its magnetic properties can be unambiguously ascribed to the stripes. Neutron scattering measurements show that the magnetic spectrum of LSCoO is remarkably similar to those of the copper oxide superconductors, suggesting that the hourglass spectrum arises from fluctuating stripes in these materials as well.
