Abstract:
Towards rationally designed vaccines The United Nations' plan to control and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis by 2015 makes no mention of vaccines for the simple reason that none is expected to be available during this period. In a Perspective, Rino Rappuoli and Alan Aderem argue that recent advances mean that vaccines against these diseases will become available during the next ten years. They outline a vision for 2020, by which time rationally designed vaccines should be capable of maintaining the hoped-for advances in the control of infectious disease.
