Abstract: Novel pathway specifies haematopoietic stem cells The identification of factors that regulate the earliest steps of haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) formation is of potential therapeutic relevance. Clements et al. have identified a new genetic regulatory network that is required for HSC specification in vertebrates. They report that non-canonical Wnt signalling by Wnt16 is required for somitic expression of Notch ligands deltaC and deltaD, which in turn leads to HSC specification.
