Abstract: SN 1987A takes new direction The SAINTS (SN 1987A Intensive Study) team has been observing the nearby supernova SN 1987A using the Hubble Space Telescope for 17 years. They have been rewarded with a view of a phase in the life of a supernova that has never previously been observed — the point at which the energy emitted comes from interactions between the ejecta and the surrounding medium. This source took over from the initial flash of light from shock heating, and a period of decades during which the decay of radioactive elements was the prime energy source. The Hubble data suggest that an increase in the brightness of SN 1987A since 2001 is the result of heat from X-rays produced as the ejecta interacts with the surrounding material.
