Abstract: A stellar source for organics Unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features are widely observed in circumstellar and interstellar environments. Some have been identified as stretching and bending modes of aromatic compounds thought to be polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). But of the more than 160 molecules detected in circumstellar and interstellar space, not one is a PAH. An analysis of archival spectroscopic data now shows that many UIEs correspond to emissions from amorphous organic solids of mixed aliphatic and aromatic structure, similar to materials found in meteorites. This raises the possibility that Solar System organics are products of the stars.
