Gross Nature 516, 10.1038/nature13860 (2014) In the accompanying Comment Mayer et al.1 dispute ancestral affinities of Lyrarapax unguispinus and onychophoran brains. Here, we contest their claim that the evolutionary scenario described in Cong et al.2 is unviable.
