The Laughing Matter of Corruption and Anti-Corruption: Theoretical Foundations

Abstract: Corruption is rightly seen as a very serious problem. However, this paper argues that we should also pay attention to humour and laughter both for understanding their role in the normalization and de-normalization of organizational corruption, as well as for developing anti-corruption strategies based on humour and laughter. A theoretical framework based on superiority theories, incongruity theories, relief theories, and transgression theories of humour are presented to study the role of humour in organizational corruption and if humour could be relevant for anti- corruption.
